There is something magical about enjoying ice cream at the very farm where it is made. Across the UK, family-run dairy farms have diversified into ice cream production, creating destinations that combine delicious artisan treats with authentic agricultural experiences. The story behind most of these farms is remarkably similar: the introduction of milk quotas in the 1980s and 1990s forced dairy farmers to find alternative revenue streams, and ice cream, with its higher margins and direct-to-consumer appeal, became a natural choice.
What distinguishes genuine farm ice cream from commercial alternatives is measurable. Farm ice cream typically contains twenty to twenty-five percent butterfat compared to the legal minimum of five percent for standard ice cream. The overrun, the amount of air whipped in during production, is significantly lower, meaning you get more ice cream and less air per scoop. And the milk travels metres rather than miles, often going from milking parlour to production facility within hours.

Roskilly's
Tregellast Barton Farm, St Keverne, Helston, Cornwall TR12 6NX
Roskilly's occupies a special place in Cornwall's food heritage. The Roskilly family has farmed this 200-acre organic holding on the Lizard Peninsula since the 1950s, when Joe Roskilly inherited a modest 40-acre farm with just 30 cows. Ice cream production began in 1987, born from the need to diversify following the introduction of milk quotas.
Today, over 100 Jersey cows provide the rich, golden milk that makes Roskilly's ice cream distinctively creamy. The farm achieved full Soil Association organic certification in 1995 and has maintained that status ever since. No pesticides or artificial fertilisers touch this land.
What to expect: Free entry to the farm, over 30 ice cream flavours including Cream Tea, Golden Fudge, and Banoffee, frozen yoghurts and sorbets, two miles of woodland walks and pond trails, the Croust House Restaurant serving wood-fired pizzas and farm-reared meat, and on-site pottery. The farm is open year-round.
Marshfield Farm
Oldfield Farm, Marshfield, Chippenham, Wiltshire SN14 8LE
Marshfield Farm represents three generations of the Hawking family's dedication to quality ice cream. Will Hawking created his first batch of vanilla in the farmhouse kitchen in 1988, using nothing but milk from the family's cows and the finest natural ingredients. That kitchen operation has grown into a B Corp certified business supplying ice cream parlours, restaurants, and farm shops nationwide.
The farm spans 1,100 acres of Cotswold countryside, home to around 250 British Friesian cows. Certified organic for over 20 years, Marshfield has invested in robotic milking systems that allow cows to choose when they are milked, reducing stress and improving welfare. The milk travels less than 100 metres from cow to creamery.
What to expect: Ice cream parlour open weekends Easter to October, over 30 flavours including Clotted Cream, Salted Caramel, and Blackcurrant in Clotted Cream, take-home tubs at factory prices, views of cows grazing in surrounding fields, ride-on tractors for children, national and local home delivery available, and dog-friendly ice cream named Scoop's after the family dog. Purbeck Ice Cream
Lower Scoles Farm, Kingston, Corfe Castle, Dorset
Peter and Hazel Hartle started Purbeck Ice Cream over 30 years ago on their 126-acre farm overlooking Corfe Castle. Like many dairy farmers, they faced challenges when milk quotas were introduced, and their passion for "ice cream crawls" inspired a new direction. They were determined to create ice cream "sooooo much better" than anything they had encountered on their travels, utterly natural, with no artificial additives or colours.
Purbeck Ice Cream uses 60% local Purbeck milk and 22% Dorset double cream. Everything is gluten-free, egg-free, suitable for vegetarians, and Halal certified (except alcoholic flavours). The business has achieved carbon neutral accreditation, with solar panels powering the cold rooms.
Award-winning flavours include Dorset Gingerbread (Great Taste winner), with multiple Great Taste Awards for consistent quality. Available at National Trust properties, hotels, beach parlours, and farm shops throughout Dorset, with traditional Dorset apple orchards planted across the farm and British waffle cones used throughout.

The Fell family has been creating Cheshire Farm Ice Cream for over 30 years, transforming what began as a small on-site parlour into the UK's most visited free-entry attraction of its kind. Following a five million pound redevelopment in 2014, The Ice Cream Farm now holds a Guinness World Record for the World's Largest Ice Cream Shop and welcomes over 800,000 visitors annually.
The farm produces up to 10,000 litres of ice cream daily, supplying over 1,000 outlets across the UK while maintaining its commitment to real dairy quality.

Snugbury's began in 1986 when Chris and Cheryl Sadler started making ice cream in their Cheshire farmhouse kitchen using fresh cream, quality ingredients, and an old Kenwood Chef mixer. They soon outgrew selling from their kitchen window and converted an old barn in the cobbled courtyard. Today, daughters Hannah, Kitty, and Cleo run the business, welcoming over 300,000 visitors annually.
Beyond ice cream, Snugbury's is famous for its spectacular 40-foot straw sculptures, a tradition since 1998 when they created a Millennium Dome. The sculptures, reinforced with steel, change annually and raise money for charity. The 2015 Dalek earned a Guinness World Record for "Largest Dalek sculpture."

Not to be confused with the larger Tattenhall attraction, this charming farm offers a more traditional ice cream farm experience in the pretty village of Great Budworth. The farm produces ice cream from the milk of their own cows, maintaining the authentic "cow to cone" experience.
What to expect: Traditional ice cream parlour, farm animals to meet and feed, a cafe serving hot and cold snacks, scenic village location with timbered cottages to explore, and a short walk to the historic Great Budworth church.

Bidlea Dairy

Three generations of farmers have worked Bidlea Farm, building a herd of Holstein-Friesian cows that have won both national and European awards. The farm diversified into ice cream, using their cows' fresh milk and cream.
What to expect: Ice cream made on-site from award-winning herd, views of the Lovell Telescope at Jodrell Bank across the fields, nature trail, dog-friendly facilities (lactose-free dog ice cream available for two pounds fifty), and they encourage custom flavour suggestions from visitors.
Brymor Ice Cream Parlour
High Jervaulx Farm, Masham, North Yorkshire HG4 4PG
Nestled in lower Wensleydale, Brymor has been making real dairy ice cream since 1984. The secret to their distinctive richness lies in their cherished herd of pedigree Guernsey cows, famous for producing golden, creamy milk that is far richer than other dairy breeds. This whole milk is combined with double cream and natural ingredients to create an indulgent finished product.
The recipe has not changed in over 30 years, and they have not needed it to.

Wensleydale Ice Cream

Set in a tastefully converted barn just off the A684 between Leyburn and Hawes, Wensleydale Ice Cream uses milk from their locally grazed Jersey cows. Manor Farm's pedigree red and white herd produces rich, creamy milk that is lightly pasteurised to retain natural taste.
What to expect: 24 ice cream flavours made from Jersey cow milk, coffee shop with cakes, scones, and toasties, milkshakes and sorbets, fresh whole milk available to purchase, and beautiful Dales countryside setting.
Yorvale
Fossfield Farm, Acaster Malbis, York YO23 2XA
York's only real dairy ice cream manufacturer, Yorvale has been producing premium ice cream on Fossfield Farm since 1989. Ian Hawking still milks the Friesian cows himself twice daily, and the milk travels less than 100 metres to the on-site dairy. Within 90 minutes of leaving the cow, it is being made into ice cream.
Yorvale has achieved BRC AA accreditation (the highest food safety standard) and supplies Harvey Nichols Leeds, Saga cruise ships, and stockists throughout Yorkshire. Notably, they sell 40% more ice cream in London than in York.
What to expect: Production facility with wholesale and trade focus, over 22 flavours including Lemon Curd, Salted Caramel, and Caramel Honeycomb, real fruit sorbets, frozen kefir and kefir drinking yogurt, available at farm shops, visitor attractions, and retailers throughout Yorkshire.

Bluebell Dairy

The Brown family has farmed at Brunswood Farm, Locko Park for over 60 years, milking cows since 1953. Now a third-generation farm park, Bluebell Dairy produces all its luxury artisan ice cream on-site using fresh milk that travels less than 20 metres from the milking parlour. Oliver Brown handcrafts each batch using only the finest ingredients.
What to expect: 25 ice cream flavours including Banoffee Pie, Cookies and Cream, Sticky Toffee Fudge, and Devilishly Chocolate, "Muckshakes" (signature milkshakes) and sundaes, farm park with animals including alpacas, Highland cows, goats, rabbits, and donkeys, 45-minute animal experiences (feeding, brushing, learning), indoor and outdoor play areas, seasonal events throughout the year, and a farm shop and cafe.
